Flowers, Herbs and History. 2

This is the plague to mark the start of the exhibition of the traditional village life of Dr. Sen's native village.

The arch over the window seems to show that the  village had some overseas connections even at latter part of the 19th or perhaps the beginning of the 20th century.

There seems only a narrow alley between houses.

This lamp however looks quite contemporary in its style!

A court yard shared in common by the various families.

The entrance to a rather more humble family of presumably a small trader

What the window in photo 2 looks like from the inside.

There's a festive mood in everything shown with its red banners, firecrackers and colorful lanterns.

Feasts are announced not only by firecrackers, but also by cymbals.

It's a wedding.

Where the first night was supposed to happen, with red candles and all.

Traditional Chinese couplets to wish the newly-weds to be of one mind and heart and to have plenty of children.

The arrival of the bride is announced with drums, cymbals and gongs together with the gifts of the bride's family.

And what is a wedding feast without this?

After the new arrival to the family, it must be celebrated.

Chinese New Year snacks.

Food for the annual Ching Ming grave sweeping.

Dragon Boat Festival food and snacks.

7 Fruit for the 7th day of the 7th Moon or the Festival of 7 Sisters

Mid-Autumn Festival food.

Chung Yeung Festival Food

Winter Solstice food.

This is the famous 9-Big dish Banquet

Various domestic appliances are hung on the wall, including lamps, wicker baskets, mat hats etc.

The traditional side tables, stools, chairs with floral pattern partition.

Some Mahogany (black wood) table and chair for the more wealthy family.

Rich or poor, what kind of Chinese would one be if one doesn't drink tea?

A most important container in the house: an urn for rice.

On the wall is hung the traditional glazed chopstick holder in green.

The rice and dishes must be cooked with firewood!

Illumination is provided by an oil lamp and later kerosene lamp.

The danger of fire is constant. Some water jets and fireman's helmets.

What's the use of water jets if there are no pumps around. A mobile pump.

If the pump runs out of water, here are the manual supplies.

In the same way that one can't live without meat, one can't live without some bamboo.

And perhaps even a flower or two!

  3. Nice pictures! Just imagine over 100 years ago, a young lad from a little known village in Southern China made his way to change China's history and the fate of his countrymen is really amazing!
