A Yellow Rose (黃玫瑰)

Yellow Roses

Closer

closer still

Two hearts

or one?

 A Yellow Rose

In a tangled lonely garden
Blooms a fragile yellow rose
Long neglected by its keeper
it struggles and it grows.

Finding strength in rays of sunlight
Dreaming life from gentle rains
Closing lightly in the darkness
Till touched by the sun again

Few observe its silent beauty
Yet its fragrance fills the day
Enticing smiles from passersby
Who stop along the way

Now ravaged by the storms of fall
Its beauty wanes and flies
And with the start of winter chill
It withers and it dies

Though unnoticed in its splendor
Unshielded from life's pain
Its very struggle through existence
Made its being not in va
in.

03/13/2013 12:18:35]Yes indeed. Delicate petals must be treasured whilst they last.

[版主回覆03/13/2013 12:21:18]It can also mean love or as the poet interprets it, the incessant struggle of Life for self-expression and for existence..

  4. Great pictures, nice poem !
[版主回覆03/14/2013 08:48:14]Thanks. I like the color and softness of the yellow rose petals but I think the last line might be better if written: "affirms it's not in vain".

  5. At first I thought you wrote this poem to go with your photos. I like he/she ended the poem with "made its being not in vain". A rose exists for a reason; it is to fill the air with fragrance. It decorates our life and makes our life more interesting, even us without noticing. There are so many unnoticed roses out there, only a few being captured by your camera. And just like roses, we also come and go without much trace left to be noticed.

  6. Why do people use the past tense of "RISE" for the beautiful flower ROSE?
[版主回覆03/14/2013 11:37:57]I have no idea. But according to Etymology Online: Old English rose, from Latin rosa (source of Italian and Spanish rosa, French rose; also source of Dutch roos, German Rose, Swedish ros, etc.), probably via Italian and Greek dialects from Greek rhodon "rose" (Aeolic wrodon), ultimately from Persian *vrda-.
But cf. Tucker: "The rose was a special growth of Macedonia & the Thracian region as well as of Persia, & the Lat. & Gk. names prob. came from a Thraco-Phrygian source." Aramaic warda is from Old Persian; the modern Persian cognate, via the usual sound changes, is gul, source of Turkish gül "rose." The ultimate source of all this may be PIE *wrdho- "thorn, bramble."
Used of a color since 1530. In English civil wars of 15c., the white rose was the badge of the House of York, the red of its rival Lancaster. Rose-water is attested from late 14c. Rose-colored "optimistic" is first recorded 1854. In the figurative sense, bed of roses is from 1590s. Rose of Sharon (Song of Sol. ii:1) is attested from 1610s and named for the fertile strip of coastal Palestine. The flower has not been identified; used in U.S. since 1847 of the Syrian hibiscus.
