Truth (真理)?

Is this a vase or two faces facing each other

Is this a duck or a rabbit

.

Is this a beautiful young socialite and a nasty witch-like banshee above and a handsome gadabout and a wretchedly distasteful lecher below?

Is it a dog or a the head of a French chef?

Is this a nude woman or Reagan's face?

Is it a single jester facing you or two jesters kissing each other?

Is it a gypsy or a narcisstic woman looking into the mirror?

Is it a man's face or a woman reading?

1. Is seeing believing? Is "truth" to be had by observation? When we see, do we always  see what is there, as we convince ourselves that we are doing ? Or do we truly see only what we want to see, what we have been conditioned to see, what we are accustomed to see, whether consciously, half-consciously or subconsciously or unconsciously?
2.  Should there be a minimum wage? Should there be social security for all? Should there be retirement benefits for all under a government administered universal retirement scheme? If there should be all such, should we secure them by immobilizing our legislative process?
3.   Should the people of Hong Kong have "universal suffrage" in 2017, as promised and required by the Basic Law  more than 30 years after its announcement under the Joint Declaration of Britain and China in 1983? If we should, are we "ready" for it? And if we are, is the Occupation of Central a proper means of forcing the PRC and the HKSAR Government to let us have it?
4.   Is Capitalism and liberal Democracy always better or less bad?
Is Friedman primacy of the free market always to be preferred to Keynsian Government intervention?
5.
Is liberty always to be preferred to equality or vice versa?
6.   Is globalization a universal good? If not, then for whom, when, where, how is it good?

7.   Should there be unlimited immigration into a country or region?   Is the idea of a nation-state and patriotism more a bane than a boon in the contemporary world?
8.   Can a defensive attack ever be justified?
9.   Can we ever have peace without the threat or actual use of violent wars? Can there everbe any "just" war?

10.   Should we always prioritize stability over changes or vice versa?

11.   Are the majority always right?
12.   Should marriage always be a union of one man with one woman or should same sex marriage be permitted? Should the union of different sexes always be monogamous?
Should there be paternity leave?
13.   Do parents always know what is best for their children?

14.   Should premarital sex for teenagers be permitted? Should abortion be allowed?
15.   Should we allow soft drugs to be taken?

16.   Should criminals always be punished or should they be rehabilitated?

17.   Should scientists be permitted to experiment on the cloning of human lives?
Should man have the last say on whether they want to live or die?
18.   Should we allow capital punishment to continue?

19.   Should human beings be the master of the universe and be permitted to  plunder its resources
unrestrictedly at the expense of other species  and/or  future generations of the human species and the well-being of the earth as a whole for the enjoyment of the present generation?
20.   Should reason always prevail over emotions?
21.   What is "normality"? What is "madness"? Should a certain degree of "madness" be permitted or at least tolerated?

22. Is a "having" mode of life always better than a "being" mode of life?

23.   Is there a creator and sustainer God of the universe?
24.   Is there a discernible "purpose" in Life or a "purpose" for the existence of the universe or ourselves in it?
If there is a "purpose" in Life, is the purpose of Life just the pursuit of "happiness" or something else? 25.   What is the "self"? Does it truly exist?
26.   Why should there be something rather than nothing?
27.   What is "matter"? What is "spirit"? If we know both what "matter" and "spirit" mean, can they ever be clearly separated or can we we ever have transcendence without immanence and vice versa?
28.   Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?
29.   Is human reality ultimately based on virtuality or the other way round? Is "being" based on "nothingness"?
30.   Is time "real" or just an "illusion"? Can we really "know" what is meant by "infinity"?
31.   Is the limit of human knowledge the limit of knowledge itself? Is knowledge just a human concept?
32.  What is truth? Is truth always objective or is it determined by the pronouncements of those having political, religious, moral, social, academic or professional authority to make such pronouncements ? Who controls the controllers and the leaders who have such authority over us?

  1. Like those interesting images.
You are a man of questions.
[版主回覆05/02/2013 19:13:28]I wonder if I am a man of question because I live in a world where there are lots of unanswered questions or because I am essentially a questionable man?

  2. We see what we want to see. This is so true!
[版主回覆05/02/2013 18:34:47]Worse! We want to force others to see what we want to see!

  4. And the list goes on and on.
    And seeing becomes disbelieving.
[版主回覆05/10/2013 17:23:30]A sense of humor always helps !
[Peter回覆05/04/2013 17:24:46]The New Zealanders are much more philosophical. In order to counteract the Britons' derision of calling them "down under", they print the world map upside down.
[版主回覆05/04/2013 14:57:59]What is heaven? What is hell? The product of an over fertile imagination? Or lack of imagination? If they exist, how do we know if they're "above" or "below" us, if the earth is round, as scientists tell us and as we can see confirm from satellite photos. If so, which direction is "up" and which "down"? If there are really some entities called "heaven" and/or "hell", how can we separate them from the earth since all "matter" appear to be just temporary states of forces produced by vibrating "strings", and "space" looks as if it were an indivisible continuum, as our top astrophysics theoreticians tell us?.
[Peter回覆05/03/2013 11:00:12]If it is already hell on earth now, what can be worse down there?
I will walk hand in hand with you to join the majority when the time comes.
    Have a nice day!
[版主回覆05/03/2013 10:40:35]Not according to Apocalypse of the Holy Bible nor our astrophysicists who say that this "green planet" will end by the "implosion" of the universe !
If the Bible is right, I am sure that assisted by the omniscience of God, then no such questioning will be needed. You are not by any chance suggesting that the Almighty God is not omniscient, I hope or you will be down there with me!

[Peter回覆05/03/2013 10:06:39]At the end of the day, everything ends not with a bang, but a whimper.
And that will be the time when we will all be questioned by St. Peter at the Pearly Gate, if there is heaven.
[版主回覆05/03/2013 10:00:28]Is life not a process of constant interrogation and self-interrogation? Should we be "believers" or "non-believers"? Should we value individual freedom above all else? Should we become anarchists and nihilists? Do we dare?

  5. This kind of pictures are interesting.
[版主回覆05/04/2013 23:23:16]Yes, they are interesting because they are ambiguous, as so many phenomena are in life.

  6. There are two questions I can answer with confidence:
    Original or spicy?
To eat here or take away?
    [版主回覆05/06/2013 22:29:37]Just two? You've chosen to respond !

  7. What a thought provoking post! You have a heavy and complex mind.
I like simplicity. My reaction to the world is as plain as water, as light-weighted as cloud in the sky.
[版主回覆05/10/2013 12:09:30]I try to be simple in a complex world. But the world won't become simple just because that's the way we like it. The world is the world. Our wishes are our wishes. The two may not necessarily coincide!
